What is SEO?
A plain answer for people running a business

SEO is the work of making your website appear in Google's results without paying for ads. It stands for Search Engine Optimization, and it covers everything that lets Google reach your site, understand what each page is about, and decide it deserves to be shown to someone searching for that thing.

This explains how Google actually works, what SEO is made of, how long it takes, and where to start — written for the Thailand market and for readers who are not engineers.

1. How Google works — three stages a page must pass

Before SEO makes sense, it helps to know how a page travels from your server to a search result. There are three stages, and SEO is the work of getting cleanly through all three.

Stage 1 — Crawl

Google sends a program called Googlebot to follow links across the web. If no link points at your page and it is not in your sitemap, Google does not know it exists. This is why some new pages never appear at all — not because the content is weak, but because it was never found.

Stage 2 — Index

Once found, Google has to read the page and store it. This is where sites that build content with JavaScript often break: Google must run the code before any text exists, and sometimes it does not finish or does not succeed. The result is a page full of content to a visitor and blank to Google.

Stage 3 — Rank

When someone searches, Google picks from its index which page best answers them, weighing relevance, credibility, experience on the page and hundreds of other factors. This is the only stage most people picture when they say "SEO" — while the first two break far more often.

Many sites that "did SEO and saw nothing" are stuck at stage one or two, not stage three. Publishing more articles changes nothing if Googlebot never reaches them. The most reliable way to find out is reading log files to see where Googlebot actually goes.

2. SEO rests on three pillars

All SEO work falls into three groups. You need all three, but which to prioritise depends on where your site is weakest.

PillarWhat it doesExample work
Technical SEOLets Google reach and understand the siteSpeed, indexation, schema, hreflang, internal link structure
On-page SEOMatches content to what people searchQuery research, titles and descriptions, headings, content quality
Off-page SEOBuilds credibility from outsideLinks from other sites, mentions, reviews, Google Business Profile

Work down the table, because each pillar rests on the one above it. Excellent links do nothing for a page that was never indexed, and the best content on the internet will not rank if Google cannot read it. The first pillar is covered in depth in our technical SEO guide.

3. Where to start, in order of payoff

1. Set up Google Search Console. Free, and the only tool that shows how Google sees your site: how many pages are indexed, which have problems, and what people search before they find you. Do this before anything else.

2. Check your important pages are indexed. In Search Console, open the Pages report. If your main service or product pages are missing, you are competing with pages Google cannot see.

3. Write titles and descriptions around real searches. Not a company name plus a tagline, but the words customers actually type. The Performance report shows what already brings people to you.

4. Make the site faster, especially on mobile — the primary device for most Thai users. Start with image compression, usually the largest cause and the easiest fix. On shared hosting, see fixing INP on LiteSpeed.

5. Add structured data so Google knows whether the page is a business, a product or an article. Our free generator produces the code in about thirty seconds.

6. Register a Google Business Profile if you have premises or serve an area. For local queries this is the highest return on time available, because the map results sit above every organic listing.

4. SEO or Google Ads?

Ads are rented. Pay today, get traffic today; stop tomorrow, lose it tomorrow. They suit fast market tests, seasonal pushes, and the period before you have any organic position at all.

SEO is an asset. Months of work before it shows, but the rankings hold through periods with no additional spend, and the cost per visit keeps falling.

The useful question is not which to choose but what stage the business is at. With no traffic and an unproven market, ads answer faster. With customers already and a wish to lower acquisition cost over years, SEO wins clearly.

Most businesses that do well run both — letting ads reveal which terms actually produce revenue, then building SEO around those terms.

5. The misconceptions that cost the most

"Repeat the keyword enough and it ranks." That worked over a decade ago. Google now reads meaning rather than counting words, and repetition reads as awkward to humans and as a negative signal to the algorithm.

"SEO is a one-time project." Competitors keep working and the algorithm keeps changing. Sites that stop maintaining theirs are usually overtaken within a year or two — not a crash, a slow fade.

"Buy enough links and you will rank." True briefly, and false permanently. Google closes these routes in waves, and the sites that depend on them fall together. We have watched it happen more than once.

"Lots of traffic means SEO is working." Traffic that never buys is worth nothing. Ranking first for a term nobody searches with intent looks good in a report and changes nothing in the bank. Measure enquiries, not visits.

6. Frequently asked questions

What does SEO stand for?+

Search Engine Optimization. It covers everything that makes your site appear in search results without paying for ads, when someone searches for what you sell or do.

How is SEO different from Google Ads?+

Ads are rented: stop paying and the traffic stops the same day. SEO is an asset — the rankings you earn persist through months when you are not spending, and the cost per visit falls over time. The trade-off is speed, since ads work on day one and SEO takes months. Most businesses that do well run both, using ads to learn which terms convert and SEO to own them cheaply.

How long does SEO take to work?+

Rankings usually start moving at three to four months and read clearly at six to nine. Google has to recrawl what changed, reassess it, and weigh it against competitors again. Narrower work — recovering pages that fell out of the index — can show within two to four weeks. Anyone promising page one in thirty days is using methods that cause problems later.

Can we do SEO ourselves?+

Yes, and you should while the site is small. Titles and descriptions that match real searches, compressed images, and basic schema are all doable with free tools. Hire when you hit problems needing log-file analysis or structural work that off-the-shelf tools cannot see.

Does SEO still matter now that people ask ChatGPT?+

More than before. Answer engines pull from pages they consider trustworthy, and the criteria overlap almost entirely with SEO: clear structure, content that matches the question, and credibility signals. Sites with good SEO get cited more often, and sites without structured data tend to be skipped silently.

Is SEO different in Thailand?+

The mechanics are identical — Google works the same way everywhere. What differs is the competitive floor and the language layer. Thai-language SERPs are markedly less contested than English ones, so a well-built site can place faster. The recurring local failure is bilingual sites with broken hreflang, where the Thai and English versions compete against each other instead of ranking as one property.

What budget does SEO need to start?+

Zero, if you do it yourself. In the Thai market agency rates run from roughly ฿15,000 to ฿150,000 a month, and that spread reflects whether an agency writes articles or fixes the structure underneath them. Ours are published in full in the pricing guide.
